Can # of items available be shown on product page (change when purchased)?

We have limited stock available. Is there a way of reflecting the sold out status in shopping cart function or having an item countdown?

I have found other references to this question in the formum but they were dated 3 years ago. I’m wondering if recent updates may have included this functionality.

The following shortcode will display the current sales count of a product (the product id is 1 in this example):
