Hi there,
I saw someone else asked this question 2 years ago and wondering if anything has changed. I have a membership site where people learn from me and practice adjusting diet and exercise for optimal health. I would love for members to have the ability to contact each other through the site so they can be accountable to each other without sharing personal e-mail info. How can I do this? PS- I don’t like buddy press. It’s just too messy.
Not for eMembers, per se, but if the members have linked WordPress accounts, there are some non BuddyPress options.
This one seems to be currently maintained (2014-06-16):

There is also a Tips & Tricks HQ version, but I’m not sure if it has been tested with the latest versions of WordPress (2013-01-09):
