I have WP 2.6.1. I’m trying to do a backup per instructions so that I can upgrade to the current version. But the instructions seem to be written for someone who already has the current version. For example, my Dashboard looks nothing like the instructions. I can’t find this cPanel you’re talking about. So, I’m stuck at the first step; how can I backup my Database?
cPanel is actually a control panel that comes with your hosting account by default (it is outside of WordPress). This video tutorial might be helpful for you:
I watch the tutorial. The only problem is I don’t have cPanel or if I do, it is well hid. I’ve looked everywhere on the server and I can’t find it let alone start it and use it. How do you initiate cPanel?
Thanks
Hi,
I would recommend that you contact your hosting provider regarding access to cpanel (if you do indeed have cpanel).
It is usually (but not always) found when you go to http://yourdomainname.com/cpanel
where you would replace “yourdomainname” with your domain.
Hi Peter,
That doesn’t work either. Suppose I don’t have Cpanel, how do I perform a backup of my database and files before upgrading from 2.6.1 to 3.2.1?
Hi,
I think in your case you should contact your hosting provider regarding the backup of your DB.
If you had UNIX/LINUX command line access to your site you could potentially archive or zip your file system too but you need to be comfortable with unix commands.
Talk to your provider and I’m sure they’d be able to provide a backup for you.
@ddolph,
I’m going to presume, based upon your other forum entry; that your domain is:

A little detective work, with whois, reveals your hosting provider is GoDaddy. For GoDaddy systems, the most common way to backup your mySQL database is to use the database backup tool, in the GoDaddy Hosting Control Center:
