With amazon s3 protected videos, is it possible to
a) Improve download speeds – ie using something like Cloudflare [https://www.cloudflare.com/] so that the file is replicated or ‘cached’ around the world to speed up the progressive download speed – ie if the file is stored in USA, someone in Australia wouldnt have slower speeds. Or is this (cloudflare) just for web elements (everything but amazon s3 assets.
b) Is there anyway (ie a third party service provider) that would allow for protected amazon s3 files to be streamed (with random access / skippable ) to desktop and iOS devices? Currently the only way ive found is to make them public which opens up the file for abuse via Hot linking.
Often users simply expect to be able to have random access to the video from the get-go.
No, you can’t do that with s3 private files. For the private files, it needs to be authenticated via the s3 API and then the data comes from s3. If you want CDN for amazon s3 files then you need to use Amazon’s cloudfront service.
We will do some research to see if amazon cloudfront works with private files and get back to you.
