I’ve recently needed to send a link to my customers (for a free upgrade)so I created a link in Admin Functions and emailed it via my auto-responder.
I calculated how many I was sending to and multiplied it by 3 so that the no. of downloads wasn’t exceeded (my customer know there’s a limit to downloads).
Now I have a customer saying thay can’t download because the the number has been exceeded.
Is there a better way to handle this when you’re sending a link to large numbers of people? Note: I don’t use a cart because I only have one product at the moment.
Also, in General Settings, under Dig. Prod. Del. Settings, there’s a Random Code, which it says to change to something random. I’ve never changed this. When should I and why?
November 8, 2011 at 11:39 pm #38276adminKeymasterIf you are creating one link and sending it to hundreds of people then it won’t work as that link will stop working as soon as 3 people have used it. The plugin is doing what you are telling it to do which is don’t let this link be used more than 3 times (just because you are sending it to hundred people doesn’t change this).
You need to generate a separate link for each of your customers if you want to restrict the number of times a link can be used. In your situation the best option would be to temporarily disable the “number of times” when you send out a link to your list (only use the time expiry option).
November 9, 2011 at 4:05 am #38277LazehMemberGood idea bout disabling the download number limit.
I will do that in future. However, I think we mis-understand one-another – I increased the number of downloads to 120, to allow for each customer having 3 chances to download, but it still came back with the message I described. Any ideas?
Also, can you look at my original message, there was a question about the Random Code under General Settings that I’m not clear about.
November 9, 2011 at 10:19 pm #38278adminKeymasterI didn’t realize you set it to 120. Anyway, that should work fine because the plugin won’t complain unless the link has been clicked that many times.
The “Random Code” is used when generating the encrypted download link. Even though it is randomly generated some people like to change it to something that only they know (this makes reverse engineering of the URL impossible if anyone was to try it).
November 9, 2011 at 10:27 pm #38279LazehMemberThe point is though, that it DIDN’T work, although set to 120 and I need to know why? This 120 allowed for 3 downloads per person. Now, of course one person could download all 120 (unlikely but possible) so this is why I find this system unsatisfactory. I could remove the download limit altogether as you suggested but that makes it even worse! What do you suggest?
Random Code Question: so when I generate the encrpyted link in Admin Functions it refers to this setting? Does that mean each and every link is identical? If I change it will every link match whatever I change it to? Or does this need to be changed every time I generate a link in Admin functions?
November 10, 2011 at 3:05 am #38280adminKeymasterYou have no way of knowing that one or few of your customers didn’t click a link 10 times so I am not sure why you are assuming the plugin didn’t work? The plugin will work as expected because it has been tested for this. You can always generate a link and test it out yourself. If one customer downloads or clicks on the link multiple times (more than 3 times for example) it doesn’t matter because it is still the same customer. The system wasn’t designed to handle what you are trying to do.. it was designed to serve a customer and generate a unique link for him when he makes a purchase in an automated manner. You should look into using a system that was designed to handle what you are trying to do and you won’t face difficulty anymore.
No every link is not identical. Once you set the random code to something you don’t have to touch it anymore. When you installed the plugin it automatically generated a random code for you so you don’t even have to touch it (the option is just there for people who want to change it).
