I’m setting up a site to sell just one product, a PPV birthday video. I would like to offer two options: 10 views, link expires in say, a week. The second option would be unlimited views and an unexpiring link- a virtual CD, I guess. I am storing the videos on AmazonS3 andd using lightbox with APR. However, it seems if people bought option 2, the link could just be shared. Is that correct? I have read a little about Emember. Would
using Emember enable me to somehow offer unlimited views of an unexpiring link and somehow prevent link sharing?
thanks
March 8, 2014 at 6:12 am #61385wzpModeratorWith option #2, the links can still set to expire after a few days. But you would use eMember to offer access to a protected page, containg the wp_eStore_download_link_sender shortcode, that allows them to “refresh” their links, by having new copies of the links emailed to the original email account that purchased them.
March 8, 2014 at 6:23 am #61386sophie1Memberthank you. So I could automate all of that, and they could refresh an encrypted link
as often as they like. But let me understand…so the emember link would be available only to the member, but ultimately, they could just share it i guess?
March 8, 2014 at 7:44 am #61387adminKeymasterThat member would have to log in every day and keep re-generating the link to be able to share it every time.
There are a few different setups you can go after. Below is another option:
There is an alternative approach you can take with emember (this is the setup that most video selling sites use). You can have the video embedded on a page. Then you protect that page using emember. Now, the only way the user can see that video content is by logging into the site as a member.
And then in emember you can apply extra security options like the following:
– Login Restriction by IP Address
– Disable Simultaneous Member Login
– Logout the Member After XX Minutes
If you have an example website that you share with us then I can tell you how to setup estore and emember to have a similar effect. We have options in these plugins to do the best protection that can be achieved. We just can’t do stuff that is impossible due to how this technology works.
March 8, 2014 at 8:09 am #61388sophie1Memberthank you. So if I wanted to have the 2 options I mentioned, I could use estore for the 10-view, 1-week link, and emember for my virtual cd? Could you tell me how many steps are involved in a member “refreshing” their link. I am hoping that is a quick and easy process for people. And one other question: when you give the amount of time for an expiring link, say, 1 week. Does the link begin to expire it is delivered to the purchaser, or does the clock start ticking when the first viewing begins?
thank you!
March 8, 2014 at 8:12 am #61389sophie1MemberSorry, questions just keep coming! Can a membership be “gifted”?
thanks

- Member logs in.
- Member goes to page to renew links.
- Member enters email address used to make original purchase.
- Member clicks :Submit” button.
- Member checks their email for new links.
5 Steps.
There is one problem with this, that I just thought of…
Suppose buyer@example.com first buys a single one-off PPV birthday video for “Paul,” as a one time purchase. Gets link, which expires, life is fine. 6 months later, he buys the “virtual CD,” with “Anne,” using the same email address. The next time he renews the links, he will get “Paul” and “Anne” video links. Is this something you can live with? Perhaps push it as a “reward” for buying the virtual CD?
Does the link begin to expire it is delivered to the purchaser, or does the clock start ticking when the first viewing begins?
The “timer” begins the instant the link comes into existence.
Can a membership be “gifted”?
Yes, you can “gift” a membership. What you do is create a list of serial numbers; each one corresponding to a 100% off discount coupon:
You sell the serial number gift coupons to the giftor, and in turn the giftee redeems them by using the 100% off coupon for their initial membership subscription. You will need to install the free Subscription (Button) Coupon Addon:

March 8, 2014 at 10:26 pm #61391sophie1MemberGreat info. Yes, I could easily live with that, so I’ll soon add emember to my plans.
Thanks for the continued great support.
March 8, 2014 at 10:48 pm #61392wzpModeratorConceivably, the gifting option can also work for the one-off PPV as well.
March 8, 2014 at 11:54 pm #61393sophie1MemberIn the case of the one-off ppv ecard, it seems like I can bypass the “gifting” idea, since it’s just a regular birthday greeting being sent and whoever gets the link watches the vid until it expires. Estore handles that option fine, correct?
In the case of the virtual CD, I am selling unlimited views (through refreshing) to only the member, and if the member is not the purchaser, then I need emember to both protect the content and make gifting possible. Do I have this right? Sorry if I’m belaboring this, but my skills are limited and mind is slow, so I want to know this is right before I set up a store and post several hundred videos! Thanks.
March 9, 2014 at 2:13 am #61394wzpModeratorYeah, you got it right
March 19, 2014 at 6:05 am #61395sophie1MemberI have estore working with APR links I’ll be using to sell my
$1.00 birthday ecard(eg 10 views/3 days). I’m now trying to create
a second option: “unlimited” views (a virtual disc “VD”) of the
same videos being offered in option 1. I have just installed emember
thinking I could do this, but looking at it now, I’m not clear on
how. In the estore option , I’ve got a product page for each video
( with a short sample) and Buy Now button. For the “VD”, I wanted a
member to be able to view the embedded video as you had described
earlier (above). But how does that work? If content is viewed based on
membership level, how do I give a single member access to a
particular video(Michael, Mary, etc)and prevent access by all the
other members at the same level? I do NOT want to manually create pages
for customer IDs. Is there a way to accomplish this perhaps with the help
of estore? I’m hoping Ive just missed something obvious.
thanks
March 19, 2014 at 7:53 am #61396adminKeymasterWhy are you going to have all members on the same level? Read the following to learn the usage of a membership level:
http://www.tipsandtricks-hq.com/wordpress-membership/how-to-add-a-membership-level-in-wp-emember-13
You can create as many membership levels as you want to define your permission groups. Then someone who buys the “VD” should be in a level that gives them access to that page. If someone is buying something else then that person will go into a different level which gives them access to something different.
Does that make sense?
March 19, 2014 at 3:09 pm #61397wzpModeratorHi @sophie1,
Here is the “tricky part.” We shall make the following assumptions:
- You have a non member “Pay Per View (PPV)” store.
- You want a membership “Virtural Disk (VD)” option.
- For the PPV option, you already have it setup correctly.
- If a person who previously used PPV becomes a member, they should be able to have their previous PPV purchases available in their VD collection.
For the VD membership (that’s a horrible acronym BTW) option, create a single “vdisk” membership level. During registration, you need to encourage people, who previously bought videos as PPV, to use the same email address.
Create a membership protected page that contains the [wp_eStore_members_purchase_history_with_download] shortcode. This is what allows members to access previous purchases; including their pre-membership PPV ones.
Now, as it stands now, when a member purchases a PPV product, it would be added to their “collection,” which they can get “fresh links” for at anytime by visiting the page with their purchase history and download buttons.
Now, suppose you want to offer a “discount” for buying more PPV which will be added to their collection. You would use one of these methods to offer a discounted price:
One caveat: The “glue” that holds everything together is the email address, used to make the purchases. It must match the email address used for membership registration as well, in order for the [wp_eStore_members_purchase_history_with_download] shortcode to work. As time goes on, you may run into situations where people “move” to another email address, and things will get out of sync.
March 19, 2014 at 3:19 pm #61398sophie1MemberI think you answered my question. My site will consist of an ever-growing list of pages, each of which is a single video with a unique name(Mary, Bob, etc). They are all the same price (eg $5.00 each). I will easily have 400 video pages within a year. Are you saying I can just add a membership “level” for each name?
