I’m trying to set up a Japanese version of my website, however when I input a product using Japanese characters the cart lists it as “?????????” The eStore settings say to contact you for other languages (such as Japanese). Does eStore have Japanese capability?

Also, I have the Japanese version of my website on a subdirectory (…/jp/). I’d like to have two separate eStore installations, and so far the changes I make in the main site on eStore (such as adding new products, sales, etc.) are not reflected in the eStore on the subdirectory. However if I go to the subdirectory and add a Japanese product to the cart, it’s still in the cart when I go to the main directory. I’m not sure this is a bad thing, but I do find it very confusing, especially if the two eStore installations use different Paypal addresses.

My apologies if you have addressed this elsewhere. Thanks again for a great product!

What version of eStore are you using? Is your database tables UTF-8? What exact product name are you using?

I’m using version 5.9.6. Not sure how to convert the tables to UTF-8? Is there a widget for that?

    The product name is: スカイスクレーパー・スージー

Log into PHPMyAdmin and browse to the “wp_eStore_tbl” table. If you click on the table structure link it will give you details about the table. Look for the word “Collation” and see what value you have for that. In order to be able to hold UTF-8 characters the collation needs to be “utf8_general_ci”.

At install time the plugin will tell WordPress to create the tables with UTF-8 formatting but you may have specified WordPress to use a different collation for the database.

Thanks, but (after much Googling) that seems to be above my level of expertise. I’ll try to see if I can get someone more familiar than I am with WordPress to help me.

Update: My admin helper changed the table to UTF-8, however the characters still read as “???” After changing the table, I went and changed the product name and re-saved it, still the same outcome.

It is still not done correctly then. Share a screenshot that shows the same thing as the following screenshot from your install so I can check it out:

I have tested with the exact same Japanese product name you shared earlier and it works fine.

You are entirely correct. My admin guy redid the table per your instructions and it works perfectly.

    Thanks again!
