Hello,
I have a base price shipping for my product at $5. then I have a dropdown shipping choice for international options.
The problem is that many international customers are not selecting a shipping choice and checking out with just the base cost. Am I missing something? Does anyone know a way to force the customer to choose a shipping option?
Thanks.
Ty

You can slightly alter the shipping variations and have 4 options like the following:
Domestic
Int……. +33
Priority.. +23
First …. +10
Now, “Domestic” will be selected by default nothing needs to be done if the customer is from the same country. If the customer is international they will choose the correct variation and update it.
Sometimes it also helps if you have a line or two above or below the shopping cart that explains how to use the cart. You can add a section called “How to checkout” that tells them how to checkout in 3 easy steps or something like that.
Does that help?
November 15, 2010 at 6:10 am #26358dmtcMemberThanks, that does help. Is there a way to auto update when a shipping variation is chosen? In some cases customers are neglecting to press update and therefore only being charged base ($5)
November 16, 2010 at 2:19 am #26359amin007ParticipantThere is no option to auto update but maybe I can look into adding a warning that tells them to click the “Update” button when they change the selection. will that help?

Thanks.
January 8, 2011 at 2:54 am #26361dmtcMemberAny chance of getting the warning to update when selecting shipping?
Thanks

I really would like to do this – I have looked in the eStore_cart.php and cant really see where i can add some text as it all php and doesnt seem to be any html.
Please can you point me in the right direction so that i can do this. Ideally under the ‘shipping option’ text and before the drop down option.
Shipping Option
–say 3 easy steps etc —-(new text goes here)
Country :
Please click the update button to finalize your change!
I would appreciate any help
September 29, 2011 at 2:28 am #26364adminKeymasterYou just add whatever text you want in your WordPress post or page where you have the shopping cart (just above or below the shopping cart shortcode). No need to modify the plugin. Does that make sense?
June 23, 2012 at 10:10 am #26365lovinwordpressMemberYes, these does seem like solutions and I have implemented them, however it doesn’t really full-proof the problem. Buyers can still slip up by not clicking the update because most of them will accept the first postage price shown to them, thinking that it is all they have to pay. After all not many people would expect to click an extra button just for the system to refresh to display their actual postage to their country.
The solution might have to be, to not display the base shipping in the first place at all because this is where the confusion arises.
Here’s a suggestion:
Instead just ask the buyer to select their country from the dropdown selection, then they need to update to see the TOTAL price. In this case, they will only be shown 1 price instead of 2 sets of pricing.
This way it would more straight forward and the steps of telling them how to select their country etc wouldn’t be needed to complicate the process. After all, people buying on the internet want the product fast and normally would miss reading the instructions which is what is happening to me.
Here’s are links to 2 stills that could help on what I’m trying to get it:
Still A:

versus
Still B (the current scenario):

I’m leaning towards Still A
What do you think?
June 24, 2012 at 12:20 am #26366Lm1MemberI had this problem too and to get around it i just created new products with shipping variation prices included and displayed and nobody has ordered anything by mistake.
June 24, 2012 at 6:42 am #26367adminKeymasterIts a physical item so no one can just pay you whatever shipping and get away with it really. Its just like when you checkout on an online store, you don’t expect to pay wrong postage amount and expect to get the item delivered. So is it worth it to put some sort of note like the following on your checkout page in bold?
If the correct shipping amount is not paid then your item will not be shipped until the correct amount is paid.
July 2, 2012 at 6:13 am #26368lovinwordpressMemberhello Lm1 and admin, thanks for your helpful tips.
I did try the variation prices included but that just created another confusion. That is because the price of the product suddenly changes to accommodate the shipping and that confuses the buyer, as they expected the price to have been reflected in the shipping and not the product price. Sure in the end it all adds up correctly but in the buyer’s eyes they don’t see it that way. That is just more administrative work trying to explain things to them. I wouldn’t mind seeing the website you did, Lm1, to better understand what you meant. You might be on to something that may help me…
Adding explanation to the checkout may work but it doesn’t solve the problem of people accidentally not reading them properly, it needs to be more straight forward without always having to provide explanation. Again, that just takes up more administrative work and time having to contact the buyers and explain to them that they have the wrong postage.
Still in need of a solution…
July 2, 2012 at 6:25 am #26369lovinwordpressMemberI have also seen how the original poster of this thread has solved the international shipping variation. He or she is using Paypal’s ability for the international shipping and doesn’t use wp estore’s international shipping at all. However Paypal only allows international shipping variation for US-based Paypal users only, which doesn’t help me because I’m in Australia.
July 2, 2012 at 11:53 pm #26370adminKeymasterI understand your situation. Unfortunately, that is the problem with giving choices. Whenever you give choice, someone can always choose the wrong one. Just like if you had choices of red, white and black shirt someone could choose the wrong one and then what do you?
Now, I am all for making the solution better but what you suggested earlier doesn’t solve the problem either. Someone could still choose a different country from the drop down. If someone wanted to try and pay less shipping, he/she will play around with the drop down and find the option that gives the lowest total. Will it help a little if they were forced to hit the update button once before they can checkout?
